Get Growing!

Today was a gardening day, as I'm determined this year to start my cut flower patch.

I have previously sown a few seeds where the information on the packets told me they were best sown in February/March, these were:

Pansy

Achillea and Helichrysum

Snapdragon and Rudbeckia

Since we were away for the weekend last week, I decided to leave my Sweet Peas until we got back, and today was the day!

I have chosen a variety called (amusingly) Pandemonium, as they are billed as 'frilly and fragrant', and I thought they were a lovely colour.

The seeds have been soaking in water for a couple of days to soften the outer casing and aid germination, and I decided to sow 3 seeds to one 9cm square pot this year rather than faffing about with one seed in a toilet roll tube. I found this method difficult to keep the compost wet, and the tubes either disintegrated almost immediately or not at all, even when planted in the ground.

(This is recommended as Sweet Peas need a lot of room for their roots to grow, and they don't fare well being disturbed when moving to the garden)

When I plant them out, I will put the full pot of 3 seedlings at the base of each cane support, and they will twine around each other as they grow.

Here's a little vid of me in my greenhouse :)

It's not too late for you to join in with the 'Grow-a-long' this year if you'd like to give your own cut flower patch a go.

You can pop out and get some Sweet Pea seeds this week, give them a soak overnight, and sow them this weekend! I'd love to know if you are sowing along with me, and to see your progress as we move through the year. Leave a comment on this post, or come on over to The Florist Academy Facebook Page to show me your photos on there.

Stay tuned for seedling updates!!

with love,

Sarah
